Presentation Evening

Sedgley Ex Service Golf Society celebrates its 25th year this season. Looking back at the Summer of 1999, Wayne and I formed the Society purely based on the fact, that we missed Society days out. Having played at our works Society for more than 10 years until it closed in 1994, a simple note was placed on the notice board asking for interest in forming a group of players, to have their day out on a monthly basis. Over 30 names took an interest, not just members of the club but friends and family.

The 1^st year was tough and we never thought it would take off, let alone last 25 years with no money or trophies etc. It was very much budget based, but with help from the Sedgley Working Men’s Club providing 3 trophies from Banks’s brewery, and a very understanding trophy shop, Raden’s based in Dudley who provided the other 9 trophies, we managed to get the Golf Society launched.

In March 2000 our 1^st event took place at the Wergs Golf Club where 25 members competed and Rob Barker was our 1st winner. Over the years we have had no less than 75 members join the Society and thoughts are with those who are no longer with us.

Today the society is in a stronger position to continue providing a day out for enthusiastic golfers. Long may it continue……..
