Committee Cup Telford 4th fix 2022
20 members contested an excellent condition course, playing medal for the 1st time this season posed a tough challenge on paper, with changeable conditions throughout the day.
13 players shot 2 over par or better proving that theory wrong, but coming out on top with his 2nd major of the season and 6th in total was Archie Shaw shooting a net 65 beating Simon on count back over the last 6 holes, 3rd was out of form Badger with a 66 beating Flick also on count back. The 3 nearest the pins went to Sting (12), Flick (5) and John L.(5) The wooden spoon went to last years GOY Suky.
On the handicap front saw 14 changes 7 players getting cut were Sting 0.63 John L.0.12 Glenn 0.50 Badger 0.38 Flick 1.25 Archie S. 0.75 and Simon 0.87. shots back saw 7 players receiving help they were Neil 0.75 and Nikky 0.63 Carl 0.37 Arch G. 0.12 Roger 0.13 John S.0.25 and Wayne 1.13.
After 4 events GOY stands as Archie S. on 20 points, Neil K. on 19, Carl and Sting on 18 only 5 points separates the top 6.
Little Lakes 3rd fix (Bass Cup)
Our 3rd fixture should have been the Presidents Trophy but due to mix up the Bass Cup (5th fix) was played for.
Only 16 members turned out to contest the holiday caravan course, for the 1st time in 23 years saw the course in a poor condition and TLC amiss. There was no pro shop equipment or golf pro as well as changing rooms for ladies. Nikky had to use toilets to change shoes, a big question mark ? if our Society will return next year. With poor greens and teeing areas and long grass on fairways saw everyone struggle with no one shooting 2 over par. Posting 33 points 3 over in the 1st group out saw Neil K. win his 16 major narrowly beating his wife Nikky also with 33 points on count back who came in with the last group, 3rd was Weenie posting 30 points, Daz F. just missed out finishing 4th with 29 points.
Nearest the pin went to Weenie (31) and the other was not won
the wooden spoon went to last years GOY Suky. Handicaps/stoke index saw no cuts even for our winner, but 3 people did receive a plus Weenie 0.5 going back to his 4.25, Wayne 0.25 now 44.25, and Sting getting 0.88 now 15.38 a 0.75 increase from start of the season. The next venue Telford will see a high Slope index 134/127w which will benefit everyone all receiving extra shots between 1 and 7 shots
The Chase 2nd Fix
Our 2nd fix was at a first time venue for our society and is one many of us would come back to, given the strong winds we had to contend with making a lot of holes very long. A good turn out of 22 members plus two guests playing for the Spring Trophy. With 37 points saw Archie Shaw triumph for his 5 major narrowly beating John L. with 36 points, Aaron came 3rd with 35 points edging out Archie G. on count back. The two Nearest pins went to Hayden and one of our guests with Boppa picking up the wooden spoon.
A Note on the handicaps, despite Archie’s victory most of us would expect him to get cut but the opposite has happened, his handicap stroke index went up 1.13 to 25.38.Not on his own thou last years GOY Suky had 1.37 shots back along with 5 others, only Aaron got cut 0.37 making that 7 continuous cuts he has had, now off 8.13.Very early days for GOY see’s Sting leading with 11 points.
Cleobury Mortimer2022
As a result of the Gross returns 10 players had their Stroke Index cut, Carlos got cut 1.25 now off 22.63. Neil K cut 1.0 to 10.75. Neil S cut 0.75 to 22.13.Weenie cut 0.50 to 3.75.Looking at the increases saw 4 players have their SI adjusted including SukY last years GOY increase 0.13 to 25.88.
Also to NOTE Bob Skorek SI increased by 1.62 to 21.25,Although he recorded his 8th best round from 20, his best ever round of 83 dropped off, Just shows how handicaps can change and confuse other players thoughts.
With the next fixture coming up and with a Slope Index of 132 for men Handicaps will increase despite Cleobury cuts, so for ex. Bob if he plays will be off 24 an increase of 4 shots Neil S. will play off 25 a 2 shot increase Despite Cleobury SI cut and the Chase Stroke Index, Neil K and Carlos remain the same.
Cleobury 1st Fixture 2022
The first fixture of the 23rd season of the Society saw 20 members attend any early start at Cleobury. Spring maintenance on the greens had just been completed which caused concern amongst some but didn’t cause any major issues. The weather was good, a cool start, but it stayed dry all day. Even with the early start there was nobody half asleep as Neil Kinsey (20), Neil Slater (23), Paul Dukes (20), Roger Mole (22), Archie Shaw (21) and Mark Richards (22) all scored well on the front 9 (Badgers).
The back 9 on Deer Park proved a bit more of a challenge for all, except for Carl Ralph, who added a blistering 26 points to his 15 on Badgers to give him the 1st major of the season with 41. Runner up was Neil Kinsey on 39 and 3rd place went to Neil Slater on 39 also but decided on count back.
Both Nearest the Pins went to Paul Dukes and the Wooden Spoon was won by Darren Fillingham.
The next fixture is The Chase on Sun 24th April. There may be some disappointed members, as a few think Bradley Walsh is playing!!!!
Ombersley 2nd fix 2021
No content
Shrewsbury 5th fixture Secretaries Shield.
Our 5th event was at Shrewsbury G.C. a 1st time visit and it didn’t disappoint, course was fine condition with the best greens so far this season. Playing staple ford for the 1st visit saw the higher handicappers excel. Only one shot separated the top 4,in 3rd place on count back saw G.O.T.Y leader and increasing his position was 2 time winner this season Suki with 35 points narrowing out Neil K. in 4th, 2nd on count back saw Archie G. with 36 points, but with a better back 9 winning his 2nd major was John S. Nearest the pins both went to Neil K.(17) Wooden spoon honours went to Stu.
TELFORD 4TH FIX
Our 4th fixture was at Telford Great Hay G.C. with threatening rain all day it managed to hold off. After a buffet breaky 21 members got underway, with a winning score a net 65 saw Suky win his 2nd major of the year and in total,2nd was Daz Brown with a net 66 and Badger 3rd with a net 68.Nearest the pins went to Asher (29)the most ever in the society and Daz Fillingham with his 1st,the wooden spoon went back to back winner Carlos who will no doubt try to avoid a hat-trick of wins no doubt. Suky now leads G.O.Y. by 11 points after 4 events.
Vale of Evesham 3rd Fix 2021
Our 4th fixture became our 3rd fixture due to Oxley being called off half way round due to flooded greens. After a delayed tee time 1.10pm 19 members battled it out over this par 74 course. Despite winning the wooden spoon Carlos won one of the N.Pins with Bob getting the other, with a high slope rating the higher handicappers came out on top. With a staple ford score of 42 saw Stu win the Committee Cup with Neal S. 2nd with 38 and on count back for 3rd on 37 saw a resurging bit of form from Roger. Early days yet but with the new R & A Handicaps, are proving to favour our high handicap members especially who have struggled to post any low to average gross scores over the last 20 society rounds.
Currently Suky leads G.O.T.Y. from Wayne who are definitely benefitting from it. Could be a close and interesting season.
